Technical Analysis

‘Blue’ is a 120 cr misadventure helmed by debutant Anthony D’Souz for Asthavinayak Cine Vision Ltd. Almost 40% of the movie takes place underwater, the actors and crew learned how to dive, playing long scenes without dialog on the ocean floor. Sadly, the helmer Anthony didn’t seriously attended any crash course in filmmaking.

‘Blue’ gives the feel that Anthony had first shot the scene as per the availability of the stars  then asks his writer Mayur Puri to write a story. The writer obliges by keeping the tension in a low-key way - with a few shocker moments thrown in from time to time - and these scenes are more involving than the ones above the surface.

An adventure flick needs proper explanation based on certain degree of reality, ‘Blue’ is empty on those lines making it clear that the film had significant plot problems. During the last couple of reels, the helmer realizes that its time now to tell a story but by then the movie had already collapsed in the tedious flurry of ridiculous plot revelation. In 1982 Mohan Segal tried to woo the audience with his water adventure ‘Samraat starring Dharmendra, Hema, Jeetendra & Zeenat, it turned out to be a misadventure of gigantic proportions at the B.O.

‘Blue’ after the initials will meet with the same fate for the same reason – unconvincing story telling which fails to hold & maintain the interest of the audience. Being sleek & happening only by the look doesn,t do the click trick otherwise all other Bollywood adventures which where cool & dapper by their looks would have been B.O glory.

Talk about performance, ‘Blue’ is Akshay’s weakest film. Sanjay appears to be not very interested. Katrina is wasted. Zayed still can,t act. Rahul Dev only walks from the frame of his previous film. Lara is a surprise, the lass is strikingly beautiful. The technical aspects are worth mentioning, India’s proud & Oscar award winner Resul Pookutty’s sound work is brilliant. Laxman Utekar’s lense work is fantastic, choreography by Farah Khan & Ahmed Khan for the Chiki wiki’ number is engaging & Australian attractive Kylie Minogue is a treat to watch. Action by R P Yadav & Mr. James D Bomalick are finely done but the question is what was the need for those flying cars, motorbike.

Shockingly A.R. Rahman disappoints.

‘Blue’ is a sad story for everyone involved with the film that will water down all the efforts by the technical team who have honestly done a brilliant job to give the film an international look but unfortunately the important aspects of cinema like story, story telling with conviction & doping the cinegoer with continue fix of e quotient is supremely missing is this oceanic waste in the name of adventure.

The movie gets 1 out of 5

The movie scores only for its technical finesse & Kylie Minogue.

The Story

BLUE is set in the sun-soaked white sand beaches of Bahamas where the writer & the helmer mud prospect of an engrossing thriller with sands of their immaturity & lack of conviction. Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) is a simpleton, while his friend Aarav (Akshay Kumar) is a rich, ambitious businessman.

Sagar's brother Sameer aka Sam (Zayed Khan) has inadvertently managed to rankle the mafia in Bangkok (Rahul Dev). He flees Bangkok and arrives in Bahamas. But the dangerous men reach Bahamas too. Sagar is the sole person who can bail him out from this crisis, but to save his brother, Sagar has to wrestle with the ghost of his dead father.

Promotion

Lot has been said & done about this adventure. Anyways the promoters had ignored the fact that in 1982 Mohan Segal experimented with water in ‘Samraat starring Dharmendra, Hema, Jeetendra & Zeenat which failed miserably at the B.O.

Nevertheless, the promotion had been aggressive & that had added to the expectation level which in the end is going to hamper the film’s prospects. Musically, ‘chiki wiki ‘ is gaining popularity & will help in bringing initial audience.

Business Analysis

Considering the weekly limit of B.O recovery in India doesn,t exceed beyond 50cr (net), A 120 cr project like ‘Blue’ needs at least 2 &1/2 week of solid returns (80 – 100%) to meet the cost. 'Blue’ comes with lot of expectations & being a diwali release, it will get initials but considering the king size budget & pitiable execution, ‘Blue’ will end up as a deep loss of oceanic proposition.
