My Wife’s Murder – an engrossing entertainer
Rating:- * *
It is not for nothing that Ram Gopal Varma’s unit is called the film-making factory. He
comes out with a film after film, not necessarily original always. “My Wife’s Murder”, the latest from the RGV factory , however, has something innovative so far as Bollywood is concerned.
The film revolves around a middle class man, Ravi Patwardhan (Anil Kapoor) who is working as an editor in a studio and takes care of his wife and two children. His job has tight schedules, but he has the advantage of a dependable assistant named Reena [Nandana Sen].
Ravi’s wife, Sheela, (Suchitra Krishnamoorthy) has a suspicious nature. She imagines that there is something going on between him and his assistant Reena. The result? She constantly pesters Ravi insininuating about Reena. There are frequent quarrels in the house. One day in a fit of anger, Ravi raises his hand on Sheela and her head hits the wooden bed, is injured and dies on the spot, Unexpectedly. Naturally, Ravi is shocked, but he acts fast to keep the accidental death of his wife a secret from his maid and children. He packs the dead body of Sheela in a carton and throws it in a pond. Even if Ravi did not want to kill Sheela, her accidental death tantamounts to murder, albeit unintended murder. No wonder, therefore, police (Inspector Boman Irani)
steps in. He interrogates Ravi, who’s finally caught.
The climax of the film is one of its highlights.
The background score by Amar Mohile is also good, for, it heightens the impact of every sequence considerably.
A dependable actor, Anil Kapoor shines in the lead role. So does Boman Irani in a cop’s role. Even if her role is rather short, Suchitra Krishnamoorthy impresses as a nagging wife. In the role of Ravi’s assistant, Nandana Sen does her best.
Last but not least, full marks to debutant director Jeejay Philip for making such an
engrossing and almost flawless entertainer.
