Box Office Review

TEREE SANG
Wonderfully performed by the lead pair, this melodramatic preaching on teenage pregnancy & parenthood is a baffled execution which swings from drama to romance.

Technical Analysis

It’s surprising what the quality control department team of SPE in India consist of. They definitely are not keen followers of world cinema, forget the regional ones. Satish Kaushik’s so called eye opener (he says it) actually takes a leaf from a Malayalam (don,t forget its Satish Kaushik so inspirations by & large are from down south) movie ‘Chitram’ (2000) by Teja starring Uday Kiran & Reema Sen. Needles to add Jason Reitman’s ‘Juno’(2007) was also a welcome comeback of the popular mini-genre of unwanted pregnancies being taken to term.

‘Chitram’ was avidly done & Juno was a coming of age ultra-smart-mouthed comedy. Satish’s ‘Teree Sang’ is unfortunately neither of those. Satish tries to make it as a drama & starts preaching on parenthood instead of focusing on vital points in the script. The supercool teen’s – marvelously played by Ruslaan & the new comer Sheena Shahabadi first meet to the lustful stroke of Cupid's arrow striking is poorly established without much degree of conviction.

The helmer stumbles in maintaining a balance from the deprived script by Jainendra Jain, Sanjay Chauhan & Anuj Kapoor & gets annoyingly baffled whether to make a sensitive love story or a dramatical preacher on parenthood with teenage sex & pregnancy.

Nor does the film really develops the relationships: ‘Teree Sang’ transforms the adolescent Mahi so suddenly like the film shifts dramas from sensitive romance to parenthood so suddenly. On the positive side, like Juno, Mahi too is cool with whatever happens to her. Sheena Shahabadi, this charming little lady in small pant is fully loaded when it comes to talent. With Rajat Kapoor, Satish Kaushik, Sushmita Mukherjee, & Neena Gupta matured performance as the underage parents; ‘Teree Sang’ gains some modestly.

The movie doesn,t get saved from being self-possessed in giving parenting lessons & giving a token like solution of a remand centre to the boy who get involved in such situations. Musically nothing significant but with fair technicalities & decent production values, the film’s ace lies in the winning performance of the smarty little pants especially Sheena.

But the helmers bafflingly swings of drama & low key handling of the plot by the team of writes, ‘Teree Sang’ gets 2 out of 5 for its performance by the actors.
The movie loses heavily on narration & execution.

The Story

Maahi, (Sheena) the only child of the 'Puri' family is a sweet & bubbly 15 year old Delhi girl. She belongs to a prosperous family and has the best of material comforts and education. While Kabir is a 17 year old typical teenager, - aspiring, arrogantly negligent, clueless and rebellious, unreasonably demanding, loving yet not romantic, suppressed yet self-assured. He comes from a family that's at the lower end of society yet beautifully bonded.

Like most youngsters Maahi and Kabir become friends. While Maahi loves the small town - suburban life style of Kabir's family, Kabir finds the urban, up market life style that Maahi is living exciting. As the relationship grows, so does the intimacy. On a camping trip on New Year's Eve, after just getting a little tipsy - the young couple in all their innocence give in to their hormonal drives & Maahi gets pregnant.
What follows then is an unconvincing drive by the helmer on preaching parenthood & teenage pregnancy.

Promotion

Honestly, the indoor & outdoor publicity is interesting. Musically its not gaining much attention. Without any novelty being planned & the media just doing its normal routine, the buzz is missing.

Business Analysis

Whether a teenage love story or a kidult love story, such movies needs proper buzz, promotion, music, curiosity & eagerness regarding the newcomers, but ‘Teree Sang is giving the feel of a Satish Kaushik event, who unfortunately till now is no David Dhawan, Priyadarshan or Karan Johar.

Lack of Buzz, curiosity, hit number, & baffling drama bazzi will not find much companionship for this venture by SPE who r eyeing teenagers & parents.
