Awards Function

The first day of the three-day (6-8th September) event, the 2nd India International Film Convention organized by the Foundation for Promotion of Film Arts and Crafts at Hotel Intercontinental Grand, came to a conclusion with the much-awaited distribution of awards, in keeping with the tradition of last year, to achievers of the year who included Hrithik Roshan, Raakesh Roshan, Rajesh Roshan for their film “Koi Mil Gaya”, Yash Chopra for his contribution to Hindi cinema, Om Puri for his bagging the coveted British title, OBE, for his contribution to British cinema, Ravi Chopra for directing hit movie “Baghbaan”, Aruna Irani for her contribution to Bollywood both as an artiste and as director of successful T.V. serials such as “Desh Mein Nikla Hoga Chaand” and “Zameen Se Aasman Tak”, Prem Kishen and Sunil Mehta (of Cinevista) for producing a large number of T.V. serials, Dheeraj Kumar for producing many significant T.V. serials, Nikhil Advani and Raj Kumar Hirani for their remarkable and indeed very successful debut-making films as directors i.e. “Kal Ho Na Ho” and “Munnabhai MBBS”, Anurag Basu for his unprecedented passion for cinema, Prakash Jha for making a purposeful film like “Gangajal”, Ratan Jain for producing many successful films under the Venus banner and Ms Pooja Shetty for unusually competent management of Fame Adlabs and other multiplexes. The Majestic Hall in which the award-distribution ceremony was held resounded again and again with thunderous applause as the recipients of awards came to the stage one by one to receive their much-deserved awards, awards which spoke volumes for their proven talents. Hundreds of people present in the hall enjoyed the proceedings.

Earlier, in the morning, the event was inaugurated by lighting a traditional lamp by the former Sheriff of Mumbai, Mr. Kiran Shantaram, along with filmmaker Sushma Shiromani in the presence of Mahesh Bhatt, Mr. Anil Nagrath, President of the Film Foundation, Mr. Vinod Kumar, Secretary General of the Foundation, filmmaker Jatin Kumar, Mr. Naresh Mohnot, Mr. Viveck Vaswani and a large number of delegates from South Africa.

The Foundation has instituted Special awards for the Achievers of the Year in the Film Industry. The awards are presented to achievers from the Film and the related arts industry, who have demonstrated outstanding or path- breaking achievements which are exemplary.

The nominations are made by the Managing Committee, and decisions are taken by the collective group of the Foundation's members.

ACHIEVERS AWARDS for the Year 2003 were distributed at a glittering ceremony during the event. The awardees were :
Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Mr. Ajay Devgan, Mr. Yash Chopra, Mr. Manmohan Shetty, Mr. Subhash Ghai, Mr. Pahlaj Nihaliani, Mr. Dheeraj Kumar, Ms. Ekta Kapoor, Mr. Pritish Nandy, Mr Mukesh Bhatt, Mr. Bharat Shah, Mr. Ashish Bhatnagar, Mr. Ramesh Taurani, Mr. Mahesh Bhatt, Mr. Shyam Shroff and Mr Gautam Adhikari.

This Year the Achievers' Awards function promises to be an even bigger and brighter, and is slated to be held in the evening of 6th September 2004.
