Interview

Saif is like an old wine improving with age - Kareena Kapoor. Yeah, I have grown from Aashik Aawara to ‘Kurbaan’, Kareena is gifted. She is very spontaneous, intense, charming right from her start - Saif Ali Khan

She looks simply gorgeous in black tee & trouser, whereas he maintains his rock star look with a bandana. Bollywood’s hottest couple Saif & Kareena are ready to sizzle the screen with their forthcoming reality check in Karan Johar’s ‘Kurbaan’ helmed by adman Renzil.

As a rare occasion, the two hot couples get open for a free willing chat with Vishal regarding their career, their on/off screen chemistry & much more…..

Q: Comedy is the flavour of the season, how do you feel about doing a stark & realistic film like ‘Kurbaan’?

Saif: Flavours change, people make trends & people follow trends. We can,t keep on making comedies. It is good that a film like ‘Kurbaan’ is coming at a time when comedy is working at the B.O. Its like bringing smile & tears together, its more touchy. A film like ‘Kurbaan’ will keep you glued to your seat, its intense, edgy, gritty & entertaining.

Kareena: Yeah, ‘Kurbaan’ is intense; it has its right amount of emotions, rawness. It has everything in it. I am also of the opinion that actors should experiment. Recently when we where in London, everybody where coming to us & saying that keep doing films like ‘Omkara’ & ‘Chameli’. I know what my audiences want & ‘Kurbaan’ is one such film that allows me to deliver.

Q: Share something about your characters Ehsaan & Avantika & what you liked in them while playing it?

Saif: Ehsaan is a very forward thinking, intelligent, warm guy but there’s something going on his head which is dangerously edgy. Its that passive nature that I liked doing it. Langda Tyagi has been a very significant influence in my career but I personally may not relate to Langda Tyagi, his first reaction may not be mine. Ehsaan is something I can relate to. Things are happening with Ehsaan but he is not saying, there’s something wrong but what is it? He is silent, no reaction, the guy is underplaying his emotions, that’s what I liked playing it on the screen. You laugh aloud when you are happy, you bang things when you are angry but to play a character that is mum when things are wrong was interesting & I loved playing it. In the end as an actor, you have to enjoy whatever you do.

Kareena: Avantika is an emotionally charged character. Acting is in my blood & I have done intense characters but Anatika is more matured in her expressions, its different from what I have played in ‘Jab We Met’ or ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ & yes actors should experiment. How long will I be doing those films where I do make up & start dancing? There must be some substance which I should enjoy doing & the audience should be engaged while watching.

Q: How does your personal relationship affect the film? Does the real life chemistry come on screen?

Saif: In my opinion, you can,t organize chemistry if the script doesn,t support. We are actors we perform according to the scenes. Chemistry gets created by its screenplay.

Kareena: Saif & I are professionals, we don,t carry our relationships on to the sets. Yes there is warmth when he is on the sets but I don,t need a film to be with Saif. I meet him everyday. Who needs to spend time working yaar.!

(All of us laugh)

Q: Point taken, both of you are thorough professionals, will you kdly comment on each other career so far? Starting with Kareena.

Kareena: Saif is like an old wine improving with age

Saif: Yeah, I have grown from Aashik Aawara to ‘Kurbaan’ (smiles), Kareena is gifted. She is very spontaneous, intense, charming right from her start.

Q: How you rate your new director Renzil D'Silva

Saif: Renzil has a different sense of sensibility. I am glad that someone coming from the ad world has a realistic approach to the subject; he has not treated ‘Kurbaan’ like a regular Hindi movie with a terrorist background.

Kareena: After Karan Johar, if there is any director with whom I have jelled with fantastically is Renzil. He has directed me in such a way that in ‘Kurbaan’ he has tapped me with a new identity

Q: To Saif: Has there been any creative inputs to Renzil from your side?

Saif: May be here & there but not really. I like to work with intelligent directors. For example all the credit to my character in ‘Love Aaj Kaal’ goes to Imtiaz Ali. A new comer is not naïve. I mean you can,t improvise more on sets. Everybody should be ready when they reach the sets, I believe everybody knows there work.

Q:   To Saif: as a producer will you make something like ‘Beign Cyrus’.

Saif : yeah why not, the idea is to make good cinema. We should now stop using the word national & international cinema. A good cinema is universal.

Q: To Kareena: ‘Kurbaan’ followed by ‘3 Idiots’ how it feels?

Kareena: am happy as I keep growing. We are like scientist experimenting. I have the feeling that ‘Kurbaan’ & ‘3 Idiots’ will play a substantial role in uplifting the face of Indian cinema.

Q:To Kareena again: Ranbir is making strong grounds in Bollywood with Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab kahani? What’s your reaction?

Kareena: Oh, finally a man from our family is proving himself after Karishma & me. I have not seen the film as yet but I certainly looking forward to see.

Q: ‘Kurbaan’ has terrorism in its background, what’s your say on the American Security system?

Saif: It’s necessary to be strict to avoid disturbance & it need to sacrifice if you want to be open but you can,t be paranoid for your whole life.

Kareena: People should not be targeted just because of their religion. There are rules to be followed but that doesn,t allow you to stamp anyone.
