It was only recently that I really understood the various nuances of acting - Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka chopra tells Jyoti Venkatesh that it was only in the last two years that she really understood the various nuances of acting and started coming on her own as an actress.
Q: How would you sum up the year 2009 for you as an actress?
A: I think 2009 was a very important year for me as an actress. The award I received for the best actress in Fashion was the biggest high I had last year. The entire credit for the award ought to go to Madhur Bhandarkar. My second achievement of the year was the character of Sweety in Kaminey. I could pull it off thanks to Vishal Bharadwaj
Q: How tough was it for you to bounce back after your flop phase as an actress?
A: My career was written off after I delivered duds like Lover Story 2050 and Driona, but I could manage to bounce back with Fashion. I cannot forget the fact that Fashion was the first movie which fetched me my first ever acting award in my career. People used to tell me that it was a risky proposition for me to do a film like Fashion and warned that no one will come forward to watch.
Q: What lured you to say yes to Pyaar Impossible?
A: When I was offered the film, I had already completed working in Fashion and was doing Kaminey as well as What’s Your Raashee and I thought it was a good opportunity for me to break away from the shackles of the image which Kaminey and What’s Your Rashee would have brought in its way for me.
Q: What makes Pyaar Impossible interesting?
A: It is the characters that make the film interesting and beautiful. I think people will be readily able to identify with the characters which they see on the screen, because it is a fact that several things are not available in life for every one.
I play the role of Alisha who is a P.R in marketing. I am quite happy with my part in the film. I cannot tell you but she is so like me in real life.
Q: Today how will you rate yourself as an actress?
A: It was only recently that I really understood the various nuances of acting. I’d even go to the extent of stating that it was only in the last two years that I have started coming on my own as an actress. I was just seventeen when I had started acting. Today like a kid in a toy store who wants to have a go at every toy, I want to try my hand at every genre of film
Q: How did you react when What’s Your Raashee flopped?
A: I had put in my heart and soul in What’s Your Raashee. Both Kaminey and What’s Your Raashee were different. Frankly speaking, I’d not say that for me What’s Your Raashee was not an achievement but what was my achievement was that the critics did not pan me, though I had to shoulder as many as twelve roles in the film. I have always believed as an actor that I shoulder every film in which I am acting, whether the hero is there or not. It broke my heart when the film did not do well at the box office.
Q: How do you look forward to your phase as an actress in 2010?
A: I am eagerly looking forward to my films in 2010. It is going to be a very exciting phase for me as an actress because I have quiet a few films which are lined up for which I will be required to shoot mostly abroad for long stretches of time. There is Jaani Anjaani which I am doing with Ranbir Kapoor for Ayan Mukerjee. It is a love story with different spins. I am playing a very interesting but complicated character in Jaani Anjaani.
Q: Aren’t you slated to do a film for Vishal Bharadwaj once again?
A: Yes. I am slated to work with Vishal Bharadwaj in his next film which will be a dark comedy in which I will be having, believe it or not, as many as seven husbands to contend with. Vishal has not yet decided who the seven husbands of mine will be in the film.
