Interview

“People recognize me as a filmmaker who makes different types of films” – Ram Gopal Varma.

His recent ‘AAG’ has failed to create any fire but here he talks with IMP about his next release ‘Darling’ which appears to be Ramu’s trade mark flick which deals with obsession, mystery, murder, ghost - themes which seems to be Ramu’s favorites along with gangsters.

Q1. How different is ‘Darling’ from your earlier horror movie ‘Bhoot’? What’s new for the audience in ‘Darling’?
A. According to the theme, ‘Darling’ has an entirely different genre. It is a horror-comedy that fills you up with laughter. It begins with a romantic comedy taking turn to a murder mystery and later in a horror. It is an utter story on relationships that begins with a comedy.

Q2. Fardeen’s facial expressions seen in the promos reminds of the look seen on Urmila’s face in ‘Bhoot.’ Does this mean a replica for the audiences?
A. Looks can be considered as duplication because any human being will give the same looks if he/she happens to see a ghost. How can the terror which comes over the face be different? Since I am directing the film, the terror will walk off, it doesn’t happen. People recognize me as a filmmaker who makes different types of films, that doesn’t mean my films won’t be compared with other films. It can vary from a spicy plate to a comedy, romantic flick. But everything has something or the other different. No person can tie a film or human feelings in any type of category.

Q3. Esha Deol has played a very intense role for the first time. It is heard that before ‘Darling’s release, a Tamil version of the same has already been released?
A. Off course! Esha Deol has played a very intense character. She is a very talented actor whose talent has not been used correctly till date. As far as Tamil version is concerned, there is no Tamil version. This is all crap.

Q5. It has been heard that the item song which was supposed to go in some other film has been done with Nisha Kothari and added in this film?
A. I am unable to understand the talk of item song. In the film the song on Nisha Kothari has been justified with the script, which means it is also another song of the film. I have liked the song first and there’s no pint in using this in some other film, it fits in the scenes of the film and that’s why it has been included.

Q6. You have directed this film for an outside banner. The film’s producer Bhushan Kumar and T-series Company is known for its music. Are you happy with the promotion of the film and it’s music?
A.I am very happy with the promotion. I am getting good feedbacks. After all, Bhushan Kumar also knows what he wants. In reality, I would want to give credit to him for the songs, especially for ‘tadap’ and ‘na khushi.’ These are his favorite songs and I have walked with his choice. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t like the songs, I also like them. To tell you the truth, if I would have made ‘Darling’ then I would have made it in complete horror. I am happy that it’s Bhushan Kumar’s film and because of him it has been made as a musical comedy-horror that I would have never thought about.

Q7. It has been rumored that you have also sung a song in the film?
A. There’s nothing of that sort. A very demanding scene was been shot for Fardeen Khan, where he had to think of a song from an age old horror flick, so we thought of ‘20 Saal Baad.’ I was just giving him a clue and that was ‘Kahin Deep Jale…’ there’s nothing except that. I have not sung any song and the clue is also not there in the film.
