The Indo-Italian project “Behind the bodice,” a film adaptation of a poignant short story by the noted literary figure Mahasweta Devi, will go on the floors by the end of April ‘09. The film unravels the abuse meted out to women at the hands of naxalites & ironically, the state protected police personnel. Depicting the internal trauma of a liberal urbane photographer who unwittingly becomes part of the very violence he wishes to end, the film is bound to probe the conscience of any human being. It will be directed by the Italian film maker, Italo Spinelli. Spinelli, who travelled to Ayodhya during the build-up to the Babri Masjid-Ram Janma Bhoomi controversy to film a documentary, is not a novice in dealing with intense concepts. The founder-director of Asiatica Film Mediale, a festival of Asian films that is conducted in Rome since 2000, has directed for theater, film & television. His choice of subject doesn’t come as a surprise considering his love for Asian cinema deeply rooted in tradition. So, film enthusiasts can look forward to some hard-hitting & out of the box cinema. The film is being co-produced by Nirvana Motion Pictures, Mediterranea films, and Rai Cinema. Rai Cinema is the production and distribution arm of RAI, a government-run Italian broadcaster. Founded in 2000, the company has been involved with the production of such titles as The Counting House and Hollywood Flies (Mosche a Hollywood), and has acquired the rights to such foreign-produced films as All About My Mother, Mission Impossible 2, and Notting Hill.
